Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speech writer. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which is a website with videos and guest posts on the representations of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American media critic and blog writer who has won prizes for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are depicted in popular media. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes that are associated with females in pop culture she also works to highlight issues related to the targeted harassment of women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet world. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. In addition to being a well-known public speaker, she has given presentations at TEDxWomen conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She has been interested in gender issues and feminism at a early time. In 2009, while in university, she created her Feminist Frequency website. Someone who hoped to launch a web-series that would examine the gender representation of video games was targeted in an internet-based campaign. The attack did not deter her instead it made her more determined to be a feminist media critic. Numerous awards have been given to her in recognition of her contributions to the field she made. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her efforts as a critique of media and founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that investigates women's representation in pop culture today.
